About Dr Penelope Sham

Dr Penelope Sham is an Anaesthesiologist and Pain Medicine Physician with a special interest in interventional pain management in acute, chronic and cancer pain.

"We are currently suffering an epidemic of chronic pain." Says Dr Sham. “Contrary to popular belief, the majority of pain conditions improve significantly with appropriate treatment.”  She believes that accurate diagnosis of pain generators is the key to pain relief.

Dr Sham provides both interventional and pharmacological management of pain.

In musculoskeletal pain, such as low back pain, sacroiliac joint pain, deep gluteal syndrome, chronic neck pain, shoulder pain, mechanical knee pain and hip pain, her expertise is with: platelet-rich plasma; dextrose; steroids; intramuscular nerve stimulation; and intravenous infusion therapy.

She is experienced with treating various neuropathic conditions, including: postherpetic neuralgia; acute shingles pain;  intercostal neuralgia; trigeminal neuralgia; phantom pain; and post-surgical pain syndromes.

Dr Sham is particularly interested in cancer pain management. She performs various cancer pain interventions, including coeliac plexus blocks, and injection of nerves which have been infiltrated by tumours.

Dr Sham received her medical degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2004 and trained in Anaesthesiology in the New Territories West Region of Hong Kong, Hospital Authority. She commenced pain medicine training in 2010 and received the Fellowship in Pain Medicine from the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists in 2018.

Dr Sham is an examiner in Anaesthesiology for The Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists. She is an instructor of Ultrasound-Guided Regional Anaesthesia; Echocardiography; and Advanced Airway Management courses.
