About Dr Athena AU | Hand, Wrist and Elbow | Orthopaedic

Dr Athena Au is an orthopaedic surgeon with a special interest in hand, wrist and elbow problems.

“Every patient is unique!” she says, “Treat the individual, not the X-ray.” As a mother of two children and an orthopaedic surgeon with a delicate touch, Dr Au believes in the importance of good health to the patient and the wider family. She offers choices for efficient and personalised treatment.

Dr Au treats most conditions of the hand, wrist and elbow. She performs surgeries for nerve pathologies; reconstructive surgeries, including for congenital hand anomalies; and treats injuries and fractures. She has a specialist interest in wrist arthroscopy, and Triangular Fibro-Cartilage Complex (TFCC) repairs.

Dr Au received her MBChB in 2007 from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. She commenced orthopaedic training in the United Kingdom. She developed a particular interest in hand surgery early in her career and gained vital experience in 2011 – 2012 at the renowned St Andrew’s Centre for Burns & Plastic Surgery, Broomfield, UK.

Dr Au returned to Hong Kong in 2012, working in the busy orthopaedic unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital from 2014 to 2022. After attaining the specialist qualification in Orthopaedic Surgery from the Hong Kong College of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in 2019, she focused her postfellowship training on wrist and elbow surgeries and paediatric congenital hand reconstruction.

Dr Au is an enthusiastic teacher. In 2012 she presented and published her experience of integrating plastic surgery in the undergraduate curriculum at the University of East Anglia, UK. She is an Honorary Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology of the University of Hong Kong and is a member of the organising committee of the Annual Congress of the Hong Kong Society of Surgery of Hand. She has presented and published in both orthopaedic and plastic surgery.

Dr Au is also a keen pianist and is a certified Piano Teacher.

She is happy to discuss your healthcare needs in English, Cantonese or Mandarin.
