About Dr YT KAN
Dr YT Kan is a neurosurgeon specialising in interventional endoneurovascular surgery (for strokes), tumour surgery, endoscopic neurosurgery, stereotactic radiosurgery and spinal surgery.
Dr Kan graduated from the University of Hong Kong and spent most of his training in neurosurgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, when it was the only hospital offering a neurosurgery service in Hong Kong.
Dr Kan was appointed as the first Consultant in Neurosurgery at Kwong Wah Hospital, Kowloon, when it began a comprehensive neurosurgical service in 1984. The unique environment of this hospital encouraged Dr Kan to pioneer endovascular treatment of neurovascular lesions, including strokes, at a time when only rudimentary equipments for this new mode of therapy were available.
Since Dr Kan entered private practice in 1986, he has been busy with all branches of neurosurgery, but his special interest remains in endovascular surgery. Dr Kan’s pioneering spirit continues to drive him to learn and practice new procedures for the benefit of his patients. One example is the use of an artificial disc replacement for the spine: he was the first surgeon to implant the Medtronic ‘Prestige’ cervical disc replacement in a patient in Hong Kong. In the year of 2010, Dr YT Kan decided to join Asia Medical Specialists as their dedicated neurosurgeon.
Dr Kan has always been enthusiastic in advancing the professionalism of neurosurgery, as well as promoting the interest of neurosurgical patients locally. He was a founding member of the Hong Kong Neurosurgical Society and was elected President from 1985 to 1987.
